I’ve just reached my 10 year anniversary at Untapped Potential and, having now made Director, it’s got me thinking about how much I’ve changed and grown in the time I’ve worked in this business.
When I started, my initial role was as a PA and, having come from a legal secretarial background with almost 20 years’ experience under my belt, was about where I felt my skillset lay and probably always would. I soon found however that this business was very different. I’d come from big firms of solicitors where everyone had a specific job and pretty much you did as you were told. Working in a completely different industry, and working in a much smaller team however, I soon had to unlearn everything I’d done in the past. Everyone had to “muck in” and you did whatever was required at that point in time to make the business thrive. This was tough for me at first, I wasn’t used to being thrown in at the deep end or having to come out of my comfort zone.
Little did I know at the time it would be the start of a brand new chapter in my working life. I went from being a PA to assisting with running recruitment campaigns, speaking to groups of CEOs and MDs and here I am 10 years later, Director of the company and heading up a small recruitment business.
There’s tonnes of stuff I can put this success down to, the people I work with and for and the leadership style of the business owner of course, but I would have to rank being around The Academy for Chief Executives high amongst my path to success. I have been fortunate enough to be a member of a Director’s Group with the Academy for a number of years now and through the support and the learning from the Group, my confidence has grown much more in the last 10 years than all my previous working life.
Of course, having that confidence has meant I’m far more competent at my job. Conversely though, my competence through the training and guidance has also given me the confidence to succeed whether that’s going to my first sales appointment, speaking to a Group of CEOs or running a recruitment event. For me it certainly works both ways so competence also equals confidence and whichever way around you put them, one certainly breeds the other and for me this has been the key to my success so far.
With the learning I’ve received from the Academy and my fellow members I’ve gained the confidence and the competence to be better. Being a Member gives you the opportunity to see life changing speakers, gives you the personal growth to succeed and, as a result, brings greater success to the business you work in. The Academy speakers always bring value and with topics ranging from “Building A High Performance Business” from someone like David Smith or gaining insight into “I Can” from inspirational speaker Richard McCann, there’s always something new to learn.
I look forward to the next 10 years with Untapped Potential and being around the forward thinking business leaders I’m fortunate enough to have met through The Academy for Chief Executives.
